WHO WE ARE
Nestled in the heart of Pipestone’s Historic District, the Pipestone Performing Arts Center stands as a beacon of culture and creativity in a building that has a rich history. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Center resides in the Ferris Grand Building, a stunning Sioux quartzite structure that dates back to 1897 and is owned by the Pipestone County Historical Society. Managed by a passionate team of community volunteers and led by our dedicated Managing Director, Mark Thode, the Arts Center is a hub of artistic expression, local pride and a charming tradition.

As the proud stage of the Calumet Players, the Calumet Players Children’s Theater, and the Al Opland Singers, we’re thrilled to offer something for everyone. The Calumet Players deliver the magic of community theater with three unforgettable performances each year—capturing the heart of our community through a mid-winter show, a fall event, and a summer musical—all directed and performed by local talent. The Children’s Theater sparks the imagination of young performers and audiences alike, presenting an annual production filled with youthful energy and creativity. And, the Al Opland Singers—a cherished local tradition—grace our stage twice a year, bringing the power of song and harmony to all who attend.

For over 30 years, the Pipestone Performing Arts Center has been the heartbeat of live performance in our region, supported by the Southern Minnesota Arts Council (SMAC), the Minnesota State Arts Board, and generous patrons and friends who believe in the arts. We also joyfully welcome bus tours and group events, ensuring that everyone can experience the magic of live theater. From unforgettable performances to community gatherings, we continue to enrich Pipestone’s cultural landscape and celebrate the power of the arts.

Mark Thode, Managing Director
As Managing Director of the Pipestone Performing Arts Center, I provide executive leadership for a dynamic rural arts organization, overseeing all aspects of business, operational, and administrative management. This includes budgeting, fundraising, marketing, programming, volunteer coordination, and donor relations. I work closely with the Board of Directors and key community partners—including local theater groups, government entities, and arts organizations—to support PPAC’s mission of delivering high-quality arts experiences. With a focus on financial stability, audience engagement, and long-term strategic growth, I guide the development of initiatives that maximize use of the facility, build community connections, and ensure artistic excellence. My role also involves managing artist contracts, recommending facility improvements, and leveraging technology to enhance operations—all while serving as a passionate advocate for the arts in our community.

In my "spare time", I enjoy freelancing as a print and identity designer with an introverted disposition and a love of the theater. Long before getting my degree in Graphic Design from Bemidji State University, I began my career in theater working behind the scenes in community theater productions. Fast-forward to the present, I have worked for a newspaper, owned a portrait photography studio for 12 years, I've collaborated as a freelance graphic artist on many projects, and have been the Managing Director of the PPAC for nearly a decade. I love learning and experimenting with theatrical light design, serve on the board of two different non-profit arts organizations, and love spending time with my two Cocker Spaniels: Bailey & Sheldon. I'm fluent in Lorem Ipsum.
